In August 2015, Liam angered LGBTQIA+ fans when he remarked that the song was about "finding the perfect girl, which most of you can't relate to because you're girls too."
He was initially angered by the backlash but eventually apologized on Twitter after the concert and clarified he did not mean anything malicious or homophobic. A few months later during the UK leg of the tour, the stage was lit up with rainbow colored lights whenever "Girl Almighty" was performed.
The song was also used in the band's Toyota Vios car commercial.
