"Clouds" signals a new sound for the group, channeling a much harder rock sound than most One Direction tracks. It features Harry Styles performing lengthy vocal runs and lyrically describes a person recovering from a breakup by partying with friends and reveling in the success they have found both personally and professionally.
It may also be about the boys' relationship with people or media that doubted that they would succeed or reach the stardom that they did and stay as long as they did, “We’re looking down on the clouds.”
It is widely considered a fan favorite. The song was also performed live for Coca-Cola FM in early 2015.
